It’s been more than a month since we started, and we’re still going strong, but we still need volunteers, and that’s why we’re reaching out. The Occupy Sandy kitchen in Bay Ridge needs as much daily help as possible. We’re trying to produce up to 2000 meals a day for people affected by Sandy with only mostly a skeleton crew. We have had really great people come through our doors to help, but most days we just don’t have a lot of volunteers, and that’s where hopefully you come in to help us fix that.
We’re essentially looking for three things:
Food Prep / Cleaning Help / Head/Lead Chefs
8:30am-6/7pm, all days
- Food prep from 8:30-4ish.
- Clean up from 4ish-6/7
- Lead chef from 8-6 or 8-2 and 11-6
Currently, we need people to come in early in the morning to assist our lead chefs with prepping food. Most of our meals need to be ready for delivery starting at noon, so it’s crucial to get all hands on deck in the early hours. Prepping continues through the early afternoon, followed by a massive clean-up effort at around 4pm.
We also need people to either lead the kitchen or assist in leading the kitchen. We have some amazing chefs who lead from Wed-Sat, but Sun, Mon and Tues tend to be empty for us. If you have chef experience and have cooked for a ton of people, or have lead a kitchen before and can take on a Sun-Tues shift, let us know. If those days don’t work, please come and assist one of our other chefs during the week.
Just like it sounds. We need delivery drivers to take our yummy food to different relief hubs. Most of these places are in the Rockaways, but we also sometimes service Coney Island, Staten Island and Sheepshead Bay. Our deliveries are pretty large and can be up to 400 meals (think two or three giant coolers and other odds and ends), so having vans or trucks are great. But we do have smaller deliveries, so people with regular sized cars can still help.
Logistics and Communications
The logistics/comms crew help to organize everything and are the voice of the kitchen. They talk to all of our hubs each day regarding meal needs, make the daily delivery schedule, answer voice-mails, phone calls and e-mails, communicate the kitchen needs to social media, organize drivers, monitor the Amazon registry, and a whole bunch more. We mainly use Google for all of our spreadsheets and computer work. We have two spare computers in the office, but bring your own laptop if you want!
Have any questions? E-mail us back! Want to come in and help out? Please do! Walk-ins are always accepted (but if you want to lead the kitchen, please e-mail us first!!) Our address is below too, we’re the last stop on the R train in Brooklyn, only about ten minutes south of our old beloved Jacobi site.
Thanks everyone. We love you all!
