Sandy Toolbox

The Sandy Toolbox project is a documentation and oral archive effort which aims to share lessons learned through Occupy Sandy's volunteer based disaster response. We interview volunteers about their various experiences and contributions addressing the multiple and varied challenges of the work. At its core, we are addressing an issue that is notorious in most disasters, the lack of proper documentation or information sharing.

The Sandy Toolbox project is a documentation and oral archive effort which aims to share lessons learned through Occupy Sandy’s volunteer based disaster response. We interview volunteers about their various experiences and contributions addressing the multiple and varied challenges of the work. At its core, we are addressing an issue that is notorious in most disasters, the lack of proper documentation or information sharing.

With the ever increasing likelihood of similar climate disasters occuring nationwide, we hope that the project will help inspire other groups to organize in response to disasters, and provide them with resources, advice, and guidance to assist them along the way.

The ultimate goal of the project is to construct a website that will provide both video and written content. We want this information to be easy to digest, and so are going to edit the interviews down to short, catchy 3-5 minute “episodes.” The episodes will be cataloged thematically and linked to relevant resources, including document templates, written guides, and web resources. The goal is to eventually create a hub to share this type of information with grassroots groups around the world.
