Contrary to media reports, numerous buildings in the Lower East Side in Manhattan remain without power, heat, and properly functioning water systems in freezing temperatures. Landlords and management companies are taking advantage of the situation and are not acting fast enough. In one building on 8th Street and Avenue C, managed by K&R Realty, we have had reports of tenants who have had asthma attacks due to the cold and the fumes from the flooded basement, as well as a tenant who has had to leave the building because he is undergoing chemotherapy and the building is too cold for him.
