Help Us Make Sure Money Raised Goes to ALL Sandy Survivors
Billions have been raised in the name of Sandy victims but the poorest, people of color in the Rockaways and some of the hardest hit are being denied those donations—including the recent denial of the Robin Hood Foundation’s Board of Directors to even entertain a proposal from the Action Center.
Following hurricane Sandy, the Action Center, a non-profit corporation that has served the Rockaway community for over 12 years morphed into a relief center that has worked tirelessly to serve the neediest—many residents living 200% below the poverty level that are now battling widespread mold growth and illness in the aftermath of Sandy.
We seek your help today to ensure that the poorest Rockaway residents are not left behind like the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Let them know that they have not been forgotten: request an explanation in writing from the Robin Hood Board of Directors as to why funding was not even considered and send notice to the other groups who raised funding in the name of Sandy victims that you are watching to see that these funds are actually going to those who need it the most.
Please sign our petition and spread the word to your press contacts — the public should be informed, and allowed to intervene on behalf of NYC residents in need.
Thank you for everything you do.
Artists & Builders Needed to Build Rockaway Memorial Sculpture
|
Greetings! I am an artist, organizer, and life-long New Yorker and I have been developing a project to build a collaborative memorial sculpture made from salvaged materials in the Rockaways. It will have a permanent home in a community garden on Beach 59th Street. The unveiling ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 4th, a block away from the garden on the waterfront. The event will take place right after the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s 7th Annual Earth Day Festival. A number of local groups are supporting the project, and there will be a substantial amount of youth involvement through schools and community programs. Some students will be creating art objects that will be incorporated into the sculpture, and youth will also be invited to participate in build days and perform at the unveiling ceremony. We need skilled carpenters, builders, and artists. Please email sandysculpturenyc@gmail.com if you are interested in being a volunteer builder! We are looking for community-minded builders and also people willing to lend battery operated tools during the project. No tools will be left overnight and we do not have access to electricity unless someone donates a portable generator. Volunteers should be enthusiastic about working with local residents. People who can drive and/or have access to a vehicle will also be helpful. Bilingual speakers are a plus. Finally, anyone who wants to donate to this project should feel welcome! I’d be happy to mail you a color poster of the attached image as a reward for your donation. Please email sandysculpturenyc@gmail.com with any questions! Sandy left a destructive mark on the landscape of the Rockaways, but this project is an opportunity to facilitate community involvement in creating an artwork signifying an affirmative vision for years to come. Come be a part of it!
Deep thanks, Sarah Quinter community artist & organizer |

Occupy Sandy Data Project on International Open Data Day – 2/23

We’ll be joining-up with Occupy Sandy to collect, digitize and pre-process data that includes canvasing forms, Amazon registry records, and more. The following week, on Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd, is the Occupy Data Hackathon. There, we’ll be using the data to help assess the breadth and depth of the Occupy Sandy relief effort, and the extent of unmet needs in neighborhoods devastated by Sandy.
In addition to data analysis and visualization, the’ll be other opportunities to work with the data, and other data sets to work with at the hackathon too.
Group will be meeting at the CUNY Graduate Center on 365 Fifth Ave, room 5409 from 12-6PM. The building is diagonally across from the NE corner of the ESB.

Dear Occupy Sandy Network,
On Sunday, February 17th, you are invited to the largest climate change rally ever in our nation’s capital. Rockaway residents are invited on a special bus leaving from YANA. Volunteers Needed on Monday 2/4 in Staten Island!
Monday, February 4, 11-3pm
1128 Olympia, Staten Island
Volunteers need to bring a laptop
RSVP to Karen at karen_jackson@projecthospitality.org
Volunteers will be inputting data that was collected in a wide-spread canvass of the beaches impacted by super storm Sandy. The data collection project was a collaboration with the Occupy Sandy network. The compilation of this information is critical for identifying people who are still in immediate crisis (such as those living without heat).
It will also help us make appropriate referrals for households that requested legal assistance, mold remediation, counseling services etc. This data will give us a sense of what people’s greatest needs are – and will allow us to request grassroots orgs, non-profit orgs, and local and state government to provide new services to meet these needs. This is a key piece in the relief effort.
Your help is most appreciated!
Thank you!

Join Us for the People’s Recovery Summit – FREE – Fri 2/1 Thru Sun 2/3!
Over the past three months, we’ve seen people from all over the city and the country come together in response to Sandy. We turned entire churches into “holy warehouses” of donated items and distributed them to dozens of “hubs” all over the city, working shoulder-to-shoulder with community leaders and residents to care for the most vulnerable among us.
On Feb. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd we’re organizing the People’s Recovery Summit, a gathering of residents, volunteers, organizers, performers, and community leaders ready to strategize on the recovery effort.
We hope to springboard an equitable and sustainable rebuilding process with workshops, trainings, and discussions on grassroots organizing, economic justice, environmental sustainability and much, much more. See our Summit Goals below.

- Present a “Recovery Statement” for equitable/accountable development based on Human Rights and Environmental justice.
- Further develop a toolkit of best practices for organizers + affected residents.
- Debate the role and relationships of a social movement to community organizing and post disaster recovery.

Three months after the storm, New Yorkers continue to rebuild. Volunteers in the occupy sandy network are working tirelessly during these cold months, preparing and serving thousands of hot meals a day, attacking mold, and finding ways to bring warmth wherever possible.
Below you will find a list of ways to have their back, join their teams, and be a part of the big project of our city’s recovery. Please notice that some locations take walk-ins, some need you to call ahead, and some have sign-up systems. For some you need a car or good amount of patience with the MTA. Others, like the Bay Ridge Kitchen or Sheepshead Bay are easy to get to by subway. Most of the sites also accept groups (over the age of 18) who can make arrangements in advance. There is also a need for skilled organizers, communications support and those who can make an ongoing commitment.

Looking for a Front-end Developer for Hurricane Sandy Storytelling Project twww.sandystoryline.com
Sandy Storyline is building a narrative of the storm and its aftermath, told through the experiences of community members and volunteers.
It includes three channels of participation to ensure that a multiplicity of voices and perspectives are represented in the documentary.
- Anyone can record their story by simply calling a toll-free number, sending a text or picture message, or submitting a story on sandystoryline.com.
- A growing group of media contributors are gathering people’s stories using audio interviews, photography and video.
- Sandy StoryLine conducts participatory workshops for community and youth groups to help build the knowledge and tools to create media for community power, cultural expression, and leadership development.
A main distribution outlet for Sandy Storyline is our web platform, sandystoryline.com.
We’re in immediate need of a front-end developer to join Sandy Storyline. We put up a very rapid first build, just to get the growing collection of stories up, but want to make a truly interactive place on the web for sharing stories about Sandy. We hope to bring dignity to the people who have been affected, and create a storytelling platform that can be used for long term advocacy efforts around rebuilding. Bring your ideas!
The developer should feel comfortable handing different media types, and working in CSS, JavaScript, and HTML 5. Features may include creative applications of playlists, story sorting, and viewing.
We are volunteer-powered at the moment but this is a creative, collaborative project with lots of potential. We are looking for developers who can help with the beta phase as well as for the long term vision of creating a space for telling the stories of Hurricane Sandy.
If interested, please contact web@sandystoryline.com.

Respond & Rebuild: Weekend Volunteers Needed
|
Almost three months after Hurricane Sandy, thousands of New Yorkers are still living with black mold. Respond & Rebuild helps Rockaway residents get past a huge obstacle to rebuilding: mold remediation. It’s a tedious job and it’s important that it’s done well, and you can do it! Sign up for a day of mold remediation at respondandrebuild.org. Jobs are lined up in advance and take place during weekends only. Advanced sign up is required by 5pm the day before your volunteer day. You can catch a ride out to the Rockaways by meeting at 520 Clinton Avenue at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. Signing up is easy at on our website. Respond & Rebuild is a full-day of relief work. Volunteers need to arrive on time and stay all day. Our last safety training begins promptly at 9:30 AM. Your commitment to this work makes it possible for us to keep our appointments with families who have often been wait-listed, stood up by contractors, screwed over by insurance companies. When you arrive on time and work hard all day, you are helping us keep our promises to people who have already dealt with more crap than they deserve. The following types of help are needed: No Experience Necessary. No special skill are needed except the desire to do a long hard day of physical labor. We’ll provide mold remediation orientation, safety gear and safety training, and we’ll have an experienced supervisor on site to oversee a job well done. Those of you with special skills. you’re an electrician or a plumber or a genius of another sort, let us know. We often have residents in our queue who need that work, and can likely set something up, dependent on residents’ availability. However, if we haven’t made special appointments beforehand, we won’t have special jobs like these in our schedule. Don’t worry, there’s always next time! Make an ongoing commitment. If you want to develop your mold attack skills, practice, and supervise a site in the future, this is the job for you. Please let us know! Sign up at respondandrebuild.org. Also follow us on Facebook. For more information about other types of volunteer relief work, please see occupysandy.com or email occupysandyvolunteers@gmail.com. |
YANA Needs Volunteers for Flyering Vital Information to Sandy Survivors – Fri 1/18 & Sat 1/19
|
Hello everyone! We are doing a huge flyering campaign TOMORROW, Friday, January 18th, 2013. We’ll be dropping packets of winterizing, mold remediation, legal, and open medical clinic and pharmacy flyers in people’s mailboxes. We are pushing the winterizing, especially, in advance of the cold weather approaching. We need volunteers to go door-to-door with these flyers Friday and Saturday, as well as volunteers we will train in winterizing techniques so that they can teach folks who come in for supplies over the weekend how to use them, as well as help folks do the work, as needed. Spanish, Polish, Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin speakers would be an added benefit. Comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing are necessary. We are located at the YANA/Restore the Rock Volunteer Intake in the “Signs” storefront at 112-22 Rockaway Beach Boulevard (@Beach 113th Street). The contact for this is 347-644-YANA (347-644-9262). Thank you!!! |
Volunteer Opportunities as of 1/16/13
Hey Folks!
Below are some ongoing and upcoming volunteer opportunities in the Bay Ridge, Greenpoint, Rockaways, Sheepshead Bay and Staten Island. We also have som great news from YANA. As always thank you so much for all the time and energy you’ve given to this effort. Please spread the word to your friends!
Best,
Occupy Sandy
Extra! Extra! Tell the world! Tell your friends!
Phase 1 of the Restore Yana Project Completed
YANA (You Are Never Alone), Restore the Rock, and Occupy Sandy are proud to announce that the first phase of rebuilding our home in Rockaway Park, Queens is finally complete. On Friday January 11th, volunteers poured a new concrete floor, working late into the night to make sure there was a wheelchair ramp built before it set and dried.
YANA is a community center that opened its doors two weeks before Superstorm Sandy devastated the region. Its intended purpose was to train workers and bring jobs to the Rockaways, with an emphasis on green technologies. With the support of countless dedicated volunteers and solar power provided by Greenpeace, it re-emerged after the storm as an important relief site and community hub. We’ve been providing hot meals, free medical treatment, legal counseling and housing advocacy. YANA has also been a donation distribution site, trained and dispatched canvassers, construction crews and mold remediation teams throughout the peninsula.
For weeks, neighbors and volunteers have been working tirelessly to get YANA back on its feet so that it can resume its important work and contribute to the long-term recovery of the Rockaways. YANA is using passive and energy efficient building principles throughout its rebuilding process. The structure was completely gutted, dried out and treated for mold, brick walls were rebuilt and reinforced, the plumbing was redone and a new system of in-floor radiant heating was installed. This last element is an example of simple, inexpensive sustainable techniques that can help offset energy costs.
The floor is functional and beautiful, dyed with mineral pigments in deep reds and browns to match the unfinished brick wall. The hydronic (hot water) radiant heating system supplies heat directly to the floor through a series of pipes laid under the concrete. This system uses very little energy — the thermal radiation warms every object with which it comes into contact so it limits heat transfer and breaks the constant heating and cooling cycle of traditional heating systems.
We’re literally building from the ground up. Infinite thanks to the neighbors, volunteers and donors who helped make it happen.
Now, phase 2. Join us.
YANA is located at B113th St. & Rockaway Beach Boulevard. If you’d like to volunteer with us, we are open Tuesdays – Sundays and can put anyone to good use. Bring boots and warm clothes.

Staten Island Community Door-to-Door Mutual Aid Project Begins 12/27
Midland Beach Mutual Aid Follow Up Conversation Project : Stepping Up & Bringing the Mutual Aid Door to Door Begins 12/27!
On Dec 27th we will begin a comprehensive door to door mapping & phone bank effort to begin the scheduling of a conversation style Mutual Aid interview with the neighbors of Midland Beach affected by Sandy.
Outreach efforts to date have had a materialistic damage response focus in their polling of information using a list of available support reverse engineered into leading questions. Long Lists of Multiple Choice Responses to get emergency Mutual Aid out to those in need.
Standing in doorways with a clipboard isn’t the most conducive way to learn about the communities we look to serve during the long rebuilding process after Sandy. Many neighbors are not in their homes regular hours or when we call (in person or on the phone) do not have the time to answer many questions.
Initial contact has already been made with over 2000+ households through canvasing, use of resources at 1128 Olympia or direct delivery of Mutual Aid by Occupy Sandy volunteers since Sandy hit but this is only a small portion of the neighborhood.
By creating a comprehensive outreach effort to all neighbors in the 10305 & 10306 Zip Codes in Midland Beach on Staten Island New York we hope to begin a series of conversations on the individual level about the post hurricane Sandy needs of the community.
Using traditional phone banking outreach we plan to create a database to be used by the 1128 Olympia Community Hub to develop & dispatch long term Mutual Aid via a long form interview to be done after Jan 2nd 2013 by two person teams.
Once created the outreach effort should give an accurate thumbnail of resident’s contact with our Sandy Mutual Aid Network & what neighbors are currently displaced.
Connecting all Midland Beach residents both current & those displaced with support available through the Occupy Sandy Mutual Aid is our primary & guiding focus in gathering this information.
Any & All information shared is private & will strictly be used to provide information on future Sandy Aid Support. It will not be shared.
Efforts will start with a week or two of data entry & then a targeted door to door canvasing project will be developed for after Jan 1st.
When we do send out our door to door teams with clip boards & a short list of questions they will have in tow a cart with boxes of Healthy Food Support Mutual Aid to share with responding neighbors.
City Harvest & Neighbors Helping Neighbors are providing regular food support through Staten Island’s Food Pantries and this sample offering is open to any Midland Beach residents even if they choose not to respond.
After the data entry has begun the next step in all this is scheduling the conversation either with a follow up phone call from information already collected or by a targeted door to door canvasing.
Help is needed on all levels and of all skill sets!
If you cannot help in person or online can you please forward this project via email, word of mouth or via your favorite social media platform?
Midland Beach has asked for our long term support- help us help them take the first step by Occupying Mutual Aid one conversation at a time with us Dec 27 – Dec 30.

STATEN ISLAND: Volunteers Urgently Needed Thursday 12/13 and Friday 12/14
Volunteers are urgently needed on Staten Island this Thursday and Friday (12/13-12/14) to go door to door inviting people to a community gathering that is happening this Saturday.
The gathering has been organized by community members to create a space for dialogue, healing and collective action. It is imperative that we alert the greater community about this gathering and provide them with the opportunity to become involved. Staten Island was one of the hardest hit areas with many residents still without electricity and heat. The Island now faces a public health crisis as mold grows rampant while bureaucracies stall in their response.
Staten Island will be Heard and with your help we can make sure that their voice is amplified. Please consider volunteering for this important work.
If you live in Staten Island please meet us at 11am at the Occupy Sandy at 1128 Olympia Blvd. If you are traveling in from another area, please meet at 520 Clinton Ave in Brooklyn at 9:30am. Our van will be leaving from there to Staten Island. We also need more vehicles to partake in a car pool so if you have a vehicle please consider bringing it. We will return to Brooklyn around 5:30pm each day.
Also if you haven’t already, please LIKE the official Facebook Page for the Hub at 1128 Olympia to receive important updates.

Occupy Sandy Bayridge Kitchen Needs Cooking/Driving/Logistics Help
It’s been more than a month since we started, and we’re still going strong, but we still need volunteers, and that’s why we’re reaching out. The Occupy Sandy kitchen in Bay Ridge needs as much daily help as possible. We’re trying to produce up to 2000 meals a day for people affected by Sandy with only mostly a skeleton crew. We have had really great people come through our doors to help, but most days we just don’t have a lot of volunteers, and that’s where hopefully you come in to help us fix that.
We’re essentially looking for three things:
Food Prep / Cleaning Help / Head/Lead Chefs
8:30am-6/7pm, all days
- Food prep from 8:30-4ish.
- Clean up from 4ish-6/7
- Lead chef from 8-6 or 8-2 and 11-6
Currently, we need people to come in early in the morning to assist our lead chefs with prepping food. Most of our meals need to be ready for delivery starting at noon, so it’s crucial to get all hands on deck in the early hours. Prepping continues through the early afternoon, followed by a massive clean-up effort at around 4pm.
We also need people to either lead the kitchen or assist in leading the kitchen. We have some amazing chefs who lead from Wed-Sat, but Sun, Mon and Tues tend to be empty for us. If you have chef experience and have cooked for a ton of people, or have lead a kitchen before and can take on a Sun-Tues shift, let us know. If those days don’t work, please come and assist one of our other chefs during the week.
Drivers
10:30am-2:30pm
Just like it sounds. We need delivery drivers to take our yummy food to different relief hubs. Most of these places are in the Rockaways, but we also sometimes service Coney Island, Staten Island and Sheepshead Bay. Our deliveries are pretty large and can be up to 400 meals (think two or three giant coolers and other odds and ends), so having vans or trucks are great. But we do have smaller deliveries, so people with regular sized cars can still help.
Logistics and Communications
9a-6p
The logistics/comms crew help to organize everything and are the voice of the kitchen. They talk to all of our hubs each day regarding meal needs, make the daily delivery schedule, answer voice-mails, phone calls and e-mails, communicate the kitchen needs to social media, organize drivers, monitor the Amazon registry, and a whole bunch more. We mainly use Google for all of our spreadsheets and computer work. We have two spare computers in the office, but bring your own laptop if you want!
Have any questions? E-mail us back! Want to come in and help out? Please do! Walk-ins are always accepted (but if you want to lead the kitchen, please e-mail us first!!) Our address is below too, we’re the last stop on the R train in Brooklyn, only about ten minutes south of our old beloved Jacobi site.
Thanks everyone. We love you all!

The goal: Queens Mamas will put volunteers in touch with a family that has signed up for the program. The volunteers will then work directly with the family to make their season more comfortable and happy. While the program’s immediate focus is trying to give these families a little bit of joy and cheer for the holidays, we hope that volunteers will forge a relationship that can last beyond the holidays.one family together with another.
Local families from areas affected by Hurricane Sandy will be matched up with individuals and volunteer families in local NYC areas to work toward making this holiday season one of joy and remembrance for all. Affected families need only fill out their name and contact information in order to be matched with a volunteer who can help them with gifts, decorations, services, food, and any other specific needs. For volunteers, the only two qualifications for being a part of this program are a big heart, and an open schedule. Becoming a volunteer does not mean you have to agree to a huge financial responsibility either. Thanks to the Queens Mamas catalog of local and national resources, products, and services, the volunteer families will have access to hundreds of ways to help for free. Our network of sponsors will fully assist volunteers in providing these families with what they need for the holiday season.

Urgent Call to Action and Bloomberg’s Stealth Visit to an Occupy Sandy relief distribution hub in the Rockaways
New York City’s billionaire mayor, Michael Bloomberg, stepped out of a helicopter midday Thursday in St. Camillus’ parking lot, ironically an Occupy Sandy relief distribution hub in the Rockaways, Queens. The visit had been kept under wraps and not listed on his official schedule. Watch this video, read the statement and stay informed and pledge your support for the communities most affected by Sandy that are still in dire need!. We are planning a day of action on December 15th.

The Video
Bloomberg and a small party accompanying him were whisked off in black cars. He missed a greeting from community members in an area still reeling from Hurricane Sandy, with quickly-lettered signs: “Rockaways in Health Crisis,” “We Need Safer Housing.” Bloomberg made his way to the still-shuttered offices of The Wave, the Rockaways weekly newspaper. As word spread about the stealth visit, a crowd gathered outside hoping to explain those signs to the mayor: a month after Sandy hit, swamping homes with seawater, many residents—homeowners and tenants—are still living without electricity, without heat, without working appliances, with black mold taking hold of walls and other surfaces. Temporary housing is desperately needed, absentee landlords must fix their properties.
The mayor emerged behind a row of police, thanked the group, and was quickly driven away—avoiding a repeat of his November 4 visit when residents lambasted him for ignoring them.
The Crisis and Statement
Hurricane Sandy is an ongoing tragedy that for many people is only getting worse.
Residents, community organizations and city, state, and federal agencies must come together to address the IMMEDIATE crisis that is worsening as the weather gets colder.
A month after Hurricane Sandy, thousands remain without electricity, heat, water, healthy food, basic healthcare, adequate housing, or even temporary shelter.
Here is a statement from a group of individuals and residents who have been working in the affected communities with Occupy Sandy:
1) Housing
Long before Sandy hit, New York City already ranked high for homelessness. Now, tens of thousands of New Yorkers have been displaced, while many more are living in unsafe, moldy houses. Many NYCHA residents have been forced to pay full rent while having no heat and, in some cases, no water or electricity for weeks.
There should be an immediate housing plan that addresses their needs; it would include: extending the NYCHA rent credit to cover November and December to account for lost wages and the storm’s true impact; providing sufficient federal disaster relief funding to NYCHA, and employing NYCHA residents for building repairs instead of outsourcing jobs.
A recent census found 2,489 vacancies in 20 City Council districts that could house 200,000 people. In Far Rockaway, there are 384 lots that could be used to set up housing for 31,696 people immediately, keeping families close to their community networks. The City of New York should seize this opportunity to set a global precedent that would address both the immediate crisis as well as create housing for the tens of thousands who were homeless before the storm.
2) Health
The storm has compounded an already existing health crisis in NYC. Now, families are living in unsafe homes, there is not enough access to primary care physicians, mental health practitioners and health care facilities in affected communities, and it has become even more difficult for those in impacted areas to access healthy food.
FEMA and Red Cross should work with volunteer healthcare infrastructures to set up more clinics to dispense necessary prescriptions and trauma counseling, and should direct money toward supplying healthy food to those in need — instead of canned goods, military rations, and other food high in sodium.
3) Safety Net Services
Workers are being or have been deducted pay from jobs they cannot physically get to, many are unaware of FEMA benefits and deadlines, and private insurers are denying many claims. The Red Cross should dedicate some of its Sandy recovery funds to public information campaigns that inform employers and employees of their rights and what services are available. FEMA should be out canvassing neighborhoods with interpreters in order to ensure that all individuals impacted by the storm know their rights. FEMA should also organize weekly or twice weekly mass mailings for a minimum of four weeks, distributing leaflets in multiple languages, notifying people of available assistance and pertinent deadlines.
Already many residents are being denied FEMA assistance because they have insurance while their insurance companies are denying claims. The Attorney General should immediately intervene on behalf of residents who are unable to make repairs and in danger of losing everything because of these discrepancies.
4) Transparency and Community Inclusion
The influx of relief money coming into the region provides an opportunity for healthy, environmentally sustainable rebuilding with the inclusion of communities and community-based organizations.
We call for a public task force to monitor the use of funds and create structures that encourage community participation to help sustainably rebuild NYC in a way that prepares for today’s environmental challenges.
Stay Informed and Take Action
From the start, Occupy Wall Street has always been a disaster recovery effort propelled by the power of the people to rebuild a better future. We, along with our many allies, have been dedicated to more than just addressing economic inequality. We believed, and continue to believe, that New York City can reverse its role as the capitol of economic inequality, homelessness and corporate control over our democracy, and become a model for addressing the needs of its residents while promoting their dignity and ability to help shape our future.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, yet again we see both an opportunity and a threat. As Hurricane Katrina showed, moments of devastation and rebuilding can lead to the return of the status quo, or worse — gentrification, displacement and continued privatization of basic services and jobs.
- We are dedicated to seeing that that does not happen here in New York City.
- And we are dedicated to ensuring participation and transparency in this process.
- We know another world is possible and we are committed to working with our neighbors to build it.

The community-run network of support for food, volunteering, supplies, clothing, and human services is an essential part of the New York City recovery efforts, and the mayor’s office wants to shut it down immediately. The mayor’s office is calling upon local police forces to “clear all outdoor sites” effective immediately. We are calling on all New Yorkers to advocate on behalf of these community run hubs that provide essential services to those whom the city and federal government, and support agencies, have under-served, neglected, or abandoned.
We call on the city, service organizations and police to support these crucial hubs by maintain location and services to community, offering tents, generators, and storage pods for supplies or finding free, nearby, and feasible medium to long term spaces where hubs can operate.
This Friday morning Staten Island police representing the mayor’s office have threatened eviction action against the crucial Staten Island hub at 489 Midland Avenue, in the heavily hit Midland Beach area. Aiman Youssef, a 42-year-old Syrian-American Staten Islander whose house was destroyed in the hurricane, has been running a 24/7 community pop up hub outside his property at 489 Midland Avenue since the day after the storm. He and a coalition of neighbors, friends and community members are serving hot food and offering cleaning supplies, non-perishables, medical supplies, and clothing to the thousands of residents who are still without heat, power, or safe housing. This popular hub is well-run, well-staffed, and has a constant hum of discussion, support, and advice as well as donations and pick ups and volunteer dispatch through another pop-up group, volunteers who call themselves “The Yellow Team.”
At the standing-room only Town Hall meeting at Staten Island’s New Dorp High School last night, Youssef was the first to raise his voice in the question and answer period. The community’s expression of extreme need and frustration with the lack of official support made for a contentious environment where city government officials offered few solutions. At one point borough president James Molinaro asked the audience “You wanna shut your mouth?” due to their increasingly loud demands for community support and housing solutions.
We ask all New Yorkers and Sandy supporters worldwide to not heed Molinaro’s demand, but to speak out as Youssef did. Ask the mayor’s office to support, not evict, the well-run community support hubs giving crucial services to New Yorkers in need.

Help Families Recovering from Sandy
There are many families in our region still struggling greatly in the aftermath of Sandy. For that reason, we’ve teamed up with the good people at Occupy Sandy to bring our groceries to people in need. A lot of good people are involved with Occupy Sandy, a coordinated relief effort that is bringing resources and volunteers to neighborhoods and people impacted by the storm.
You can now place an order on our site that will be donated directly to the Occupy Sandy group. Just complete your order here and we’ll deliver it to one of their kitchens here in Brooklyn.
100% of the donated items will go to families in Brooklyn who could really use a helping hand. Just build a shopping cart with items that you would like to donate and we’ll do the rest.
Go to http://www.localbee.com/sandy-recovery.html to make food donations.
Orders can be made anytime before Saturday Dec 1st.
When placing your order, simply select “Hurricane Sandy Donation” as your Pickup Point.
To make it even easier to help, you can use the code DONATE to take 20% off of any order you will donate entirely to the Occupy Sandy effort.

Update on New York State Toll Waivers
Below describes the DOT vehicles and the Red Cross Volunteer toll waiver that has been approved and what the driver needs to say and provide to the toll collector for toll free travel.
Presently this includes other outside agencies, relief organizations and companies or volunteers responding to the relief effort for Hurricane Sandy. This is done by the driver of the vehicle advising the Toll Collector that they are a relief responder for Hurricane Sandy at the time when payment is expected. For both processes the procedure below is being followed.
For any of these requests the driver of the vehicle uses a staffed toll lane and at the time of expected toll payment, informs the Toll Collector that they are providing relief for Hurricane Sandy. If DOT vehicles with the letter from Don Bell or Red Cross Volunteers with Id this is when they present those to the Toll Collector. Others need to mention to the toll collector that they are providing relief for Hurricane Sandy. Toll Collector will fill out a brief, but necessary form noting this for internal use only and the vehicle(s) can then pass without delay or toll payment.

Sandy Volunteer In Person Meeting – Tuesday 11/20
Dear Occupy Sandy Community!
Occupy Sandy formed out of crisis not to perform disaster relief, but to build long-term relationships with communities and to fight against disaster capitalism.
As we move into the fourth week of the Occupy Sandy project, we need to ensure that communication is accessible to everyone involved and decisions on how we move forward are made in equitable ways. This is no small challenge! Below are two ways that we believe will help us move in that direction.
1. Regular in person meetings (more info below)
2. Regular conference calls every Monday and Thursday at 9PM EST that anyone can join (more info below)
All of this information can be found here.
1. In person meeting – Tuesday, 11/20, 7:30 PM. St. Jacobi Church in Sunset Park, 5406 4th ave
Agenda
Where have we been?
(How did Occupy Sandy come about? What are the decisions that were made that got this project off the ground? By whom and how were they made? What structures were established for decision-making and allocation of funds and resources? How has our work been received by effected communities and the larger audience?)
Where are we now?
(What is the work that is currently happening on the ground? How is it evolving and what plans are currently in development? Are there logistical limitations to the work we’re doing and how can it be improved?)
Where are we going?
(What are our goals and intentions for the Occupy Sandy Project both in the short term and long term? What are the needs and goals of the communities we have been working with and how what roles do we play within that?)
How do we get there?
(Most likely will not be addressed within this meeting, but we should keep this question in mind as we gather information to work towards getting on the same page in hopes of moving forward in an accessible and equitable way.)
When is the next meeting?
(What action steps do we need to fulfill before then?)
2. Regular Conference Calls - On the last Occupy Sandy call we decided on a regular call schedule for Mondays and Thursdays at 9pm EST.
Since the early days of Occupy Sandy, certain kinds of decisions with impact on the entire network, i.e. resource allocation, have been made via InterOcc conference call. These calls have always been open to anyone, but we know that not everyone has been aware of them or known how to access them.
Please spread the word about these calls to everyone at your sites, so we can make them as accessible as possible to everyone involved with the recovery effort. Please note: This week we will NOT have a call Thursday night as it is Thanksgiving.
There are two easy ways to get on the call. The best is to register at the link below. This allows us to have a more orderly call as your name will be listed on the dashboard and we can call on you when you wish to speak. You can use the same call in number for all calls after registering for the first time.

Agenda
Anyone can add to the weekly agenda at the link below.
A list of regular report-backs that will come before other agenda items can be found at the link below. Please add agenda items under the list of regular report-backs and put your name next to any agenda item you add.

Facilitation
We need conference call facilitators! If you would like to learn how to facilitate using the Maestro conference call system, please e-mail Tammy at tammy@interoccupy.net and to set up a training.
We also need to begin building overall facilitation skills for in-person meetings. If you would like to help bottom-line facilitation training, please think about working with others to begin to fulfill this need.
It’s a joy to work with you all and we hope everyone will feel empowered to assert their voices as we move forward together. This project belongs to all of us who have expended blood, sweat, and tears and who continue to have hopes and dreams for our future work together.
Thank you for everything you do!

ALERT: Today Friday 11/16, tell Mayor Bloomberg more action is needed for those in need
Hello Sandy Volunteers!
Below is what is on deck. We have lots of opportunities at 520 Clinton Avenue one of our main distribution hubs, St. Mary’s in Bayridge, and Sea Bright and Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, so be sure to read all the way through.
Also St. Jacobi 5406 4th Avenue and 110 Wolcott Street in Red Hook really needs volunteers during the week – please lend a hand if you can!!
ALERT: Today Friday 11/16, tell Mayor Bloomberg more action is needed for those in need
At Noon TODAY FRIDAY 11/16, in front of City Hall, nurses, doctors, EMTs, and other healthcare professionals will go to the mayor to demand more coordinated action to rebuild our city’s healthcare infrastructure and care for the thousands of people hurting after Hurricane Sandy.
Will you be there? And can you help get other nurses there?
WHAT: Tell Mayor Bloomberg about urgent medical needs after the storm
WHEN: Friday, Nov. 16, Noon
WHERE: In front of City Hall, 260 Broadway, Manhattan, NY
FLIER: Nov. 16 City Hall Rally (.pdf; Adobe Acrobat Reader required)
Volunteers in the field urgently need supplies and greater help from the federal and city government. These life-saving volunteers have told us themselves that they can’t fill the place of a real community health network, and are asking us to help get clinics, pharmacies and hospitals re-opened.
On Friday, we’re taking a list of those medical needs to Mayor Bloomberg to ask for the City’s help.
New York’s healthcare crisis is still unfolding – and likely to get worse. The response from city, state, and federal officials has been too little and too late. Urgent action and greater coordination are needed to help thousands of people in desperate need.
The storm badly damaged NYC’s healthcare system, and there is currently no Level One Trauma Center below 57th St. in Manhattan. The evacuation of Bellevue, NYU Langone, and Coney Island Hospitals has left some of our city’s most vulnerable patients forced to look elsewhere for care. Our city is short more than 2,000 hospital beds. We need our city and state officials to do everything in their power to re-open the hospitals as soon as possible.
Other hospitals are slammed with additional patients, and nurses on some units are working without proper staffing or training. All hospitals need to provide adequate staffing and training to deal with the influx of patients. And our city and state officials need to make a real plan to deal with the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2010.
Thousands of New Yorkers – in Staten Island, the Rockaways, Coney Island, and beyond – are still stuck in their homes with no heat, no electricity, and urgent (and unattended) medical needs. Many of these people will get worse the longer they go unattended. Children and seniors are especially in need. Access to medication and medical devices is severely limited.
We are asking the Mayor to work with us to get medical care and medications out to the most devastated neighborhoods in the Rockaways, Coney Island and Staten Island, and to re-open services at Bellevue and Coney Island Hospitals on a clear and realistic timeline.
NYSNA is helping to coordinate this action with other frontline relief workers, including Physicians for a National Health Program, Occupy Sandy, the People’s Medical Relief, and many independent relief volunteers.
This group met with representatives from FEMA on Wednesday night. FEMA told us they would like to help get more resources into the field – but they can’t do it without a formal request from the Mayor’s office.
It is late notice but we would like to make a real push to get nurses and our staff to this action. Please do your part today to tell nurses and ask them to come.
Dan Lutz and Desma Holcomb from our staff will be coordinating this action.
Thank you for everything you do!!
Best,
Occupy Sandy Team
Seeking to Fill Multiple Roles in Clean Up Effort
We are looking for volunteers to fill the following roles. With the exception of roving photographers the ideal volunteer will be able to commit to at least 3-4 days of work during the week or on weekends for an extended period of time. Many of these roles will benefit from volunteers with specific skill sets, however if a volunteer can commit to us, we can train them. Unemployed? How would you like to be funemployed?
Please read our list of positions available below and then FILL OUT THIS FORM
Field Coordinators – Field coordinators will be responsible for ensuring safety and quality control with our teams in the field.
Team Leaders – Team Leaders will need to provide inexperienced volunteers with the knowledge and skills to keep them working safe and productively. The ideal team leader has construction, deconstruction, or mold prevention/remediation experience.
Dispatchers – The dispatcher will coordinate with our assessors to create work orders based on expected volunteer numbers and send teams to perform the work. Ideal candidates will be able to remain calm and organized in a high stress environment.
Tool Wranglers – The tool wrangler will maintain and repair tools at our Rockaway hub. They will sign tools out to teams in the morning and sign them back in at night. Tool wranglers will also be responsible for performing regular physical inventories. Ideal candidates will be well organized and be familiar with hand tools, power tools, and basic small engine maintenance.
Roving Photographers – The roving photographer will visit teams working in the field to document their activities to help us spread word of our services and needs in the field. Photographers must have their own digital SLR camera, and ideally their own transportation.
Office Support – Office support volunteers will help answer phone calls and emails from volunteers wanting to work and effected people seeking our services, and perform data entry tasks.
We hope you can come on board with us! Thank you so much for everything you do and please email us at Oscleanoutvol@gmail.com with any questions

Hurricane Hackathon
Even if you’re not a techie, it would be great to have you at tomorrow’s Hurricane Hackers NYC linked here. (https://hurricanehackersnyc-es2.eventbrite.com/?rank=1),especially if you want to connect with people from Sandy Tech to workshop technical solutions to a problem you’ve encountered with Occupy Sandy.
We’re going to be workshopping a lot of the issues that we Occupy Sandy volunteers have wanted to address but haven’t had a chance to. Our initial focus tomorrow is Comms, but if there is anything else you want to do some problem solving for, it will be a good space for that as well.
Event begins at 9AM, non-tech folks can come by any time to work with us or use the space, and as far as what’s already organized, a lot of non-tech work will begin around 3PM.
If you want to be trained to use Sahana, the software platform we’re implementing to integrate all of our information and manage our resources, the lead developer will be around tomorrow, a number of us will have been trained + can assist, and we’ll be doing trainings constantly at 520, Jacobi, and at other sites throughout the city as much as we can until everyone who wants training gets it.
See you there, and hope to plan more workshop days in the future for those who can’t make it tomorrow!

MANHATTAN – CHINATOWN
CAAAV CAAAV
46 Hester St Frnt A · New York
(212) 473-6485
served more than 500 people yesterday to get their phones charged, to get food and supplies, and most importantly to get INFORMATION.
This is what they need immediately:
1) Donations. Specifically– food, water, flashlights, batteries (AA, AAA, D). We could use another generator and power outlets for people to charge things.
2) Volunteers. To help with outreach, distribution of supplies, and organizing/moving people. We anticipate more than double the amount of people to come through tomorrow. We’re also getting specific requests to check up on seniors and would like to be able to do that if possible. (Note: If you plan on coming through you will not have much ability to use your cellphone. Maybe texts, but not much else.)
3) Take action. Demand that the leaders of this City take responsibility for Chinatown/Lower East Side and other still impacted communities. Stop putting people over profits. The people of our communities deserve just as much attention as Wall Street and Times Square.
And of course, we can always use financial donations. Just today alone, CAAAV staff and volunteers used hundreds of dollars of our own money to buy flashlights and batteries. Please consider making a donation at http://www.nycharities.org/donate/c_donate.asp?CharityCode=1838&amount&designategift2.
If you have any questions or want to support, reach out to us at justice@caaav.org. We are trying to get back to people as soon as we can, but we’re most likely able to respond after 8pm when we can get to a place with cell service. The best thing you can do is just come down and bring stuff/people with you.

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING – RECOVERS.ORG
STAFF PHONE LINES
This is daily call out for volunteers in dry, quiet places to staff phone lines!
The NYTimes is running the various different recovers.org hotline numbers now, so the volume of calls is increasing rapidly.
Please text me at 347-824-8583 and email support@recovers.org to volunteer or pass this on to a friend!
OUTREACH NEEDS
Would you be willing to help us teach community organizations (churches, nonprofits, people providing aid) in the neighborhoods to log in and use the aid on the recovers.org sites? Internet tools are cool – making sure everyone who needs them has access is cooler!
We are getting a ton of offers to help – from skills, to donation items. We’re also seeing the first needs streaming in. The most important thing right now is getting the neighborhood organizations on board. Using the site as a common thread, they can coordinate together and make sure no one is falling through the cracks.
This is important: churches, nonprofits and shelters are the ones approached for help long-term. Could you help us spread the access to resources?
If you could, it would be great to have you walk/bike around the affected area speaking to the local organizations. They might not have internet access yet, but when they do they can contact us for an admin account. They’ll be able to:
- See Needs/Volunteers/Donation items available in their area
- Match needs with resources
- Track what has been given to each person, and coordinate with other organizations assisting them
- Ask for help from a massive crowd of people actively watching the site!
If you think you are down, or could recruit a couple more people to help out, we would greatly appreciate your help!
Click here for the flyer to pass out and email caitria@recovers.org
Thank you for your continued service!
Best,
Occupy Sandy
